US Headed For Measles Record

The US is poised to set a measles record this year with dozens of new cases cropping up in recent weeks and more expected in the wake of Easter and Passover gatherings, The Washington Post reports.

The cases, mostly among unvaccinated populations, are linked to travelers returning from measles hot spots like Israel, Ukraine and the Philippines.

The current tally of 626 cases is the highest in 5 years. The largest outbreak is in New York City, with 303 cases so far; cases are up from Arizona to Kentucky to New Hampshire.

The surge has the FDA stressing the importance of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine long-embraced by scientists as safe and effective. But the outbreak has been met with radio silence from President Trump, stirring debate about whether he should step in and speak up about vaccination—as his predecessors did, STAT reports.
