Alabama Just Banned Abortion

Yesterday Alabama lawmakers passed the most restrictive abortion law in America, banning virtually all abortions with no exceptions for victims of rape and incest.

Clashing with federal court rulings, Alabama’s law allows only abortions needed to save a mother’s life.

The law
s backers have plans beyond Alabama: Leveraging the bill to land Roe v. Wade back in the Supreme Court, with the hope of overturning the landmark ruling that legalized abortion across the US.

16 states are working toward the same goal, passing or trying to pass “heartbeat bills” banning abortions after a fetal heartbeat can be detected—which comes before many women know they’re pregnant.
