Brand new mothers asked to donate their birth tissue likely assumed—or were told—that it would go to a worthy medical cause.
But some donations ended up in the hands of profit-hungry commercial amniotic stem cell manufacturers.

This deep dive by ProPublica and The New Yorker uncovers some unsavory profiteers—including “disgraced doctors who were recast as salespeople, manufacturers that cloaked themselves in pseudoscience and had few scientists on staff, and clinics that offer to treat conditions like multiple sclerosis or kidney disease without specialized training”—taking advantage of the largely unregulated industry.
