Coke's Chokehold on Research

Coca-Cola had the power to bury research it funded under an agreement with public universities in the US and Canada, according to a University of Cambridge study published in the Journal of Public Health Policy.

The findings give credence to concerns the food industry is mimicking Big Tobacco's efforts to influence research.

Under agreements with institutions including the University of Toronto and the University of Washington, Coke could halt publication of studies unfavorable to the brand.

Researchers found no hard evidence that Coke exercised that right, but the documents obtained had several redactions.

Coca-Cola said that in 2016 it stopped funding health research.
