Getting Rich From Wage Theft

In California’s crowded market of elder care homes, CEOs amass huge wealth while staffers face rampant exploitation, wage theft, and intimidation if they speak up.

In the past decade, US care home operators violated minimum wage, overtime or record-keeping laws in some 1,400 cases—35% in California.

Some staffers work round-the-clock for $1 an hour and are forced to pay their own substitutes. But when workers speak up, many bad actors escape full punishment.

“It’s a classic tale of human greed. Their entire business model is predicated on not making payroll,” says Tia Koonse of the UCLA Labor Center.
