Mind Your “Manels”

No need to settle for a “manel”—now you can consult the 10,000-member strong Request a Woman Scientist international database to ensure a more diverse panel.

500 Women Scientists, a Boulder, Colorado nonprofit, created the database to allow users—not just conference organizers, but journalists, policymakers, and educators—find female specialists in a range of fields.

Increasing the database’s reach will require men to engage, too, and to realize that equity and representation “…should be as important as other considerations when organizing a research team or a speaker panel,” says University of Wyoming in Laramie ecologist and 500 Women Scientists co-founder Jane Zelikova.
