Plastic Pollution Starts With Plastic Production

The now-ubiquitous imagery of plastic mounting in oceans and in the bellies of wildlife has sparked a dialogue about plastic pollution. But there’s a missing link, notes a new report from the Center for International Environmental Law.

Plastic products result from a long production line that fuels climate change at every stage: from extraction and transport to refining and manufacturing to waste management.

This year, 189 coal-fired power plants’ worth of greenhouse gases will be emitted through producing and incinerating plastic; if production continues unabated, that number will reach the equivalent of 295 coal plants by 2030; 615 plants by 2050.
