In Research, Male Dominance is the Default Setting

Women account for over half of people living with HIV worldwide. That’s not obvious from the research, which relies heavily on gay male participants.

Yet there are key differences in how male and female immune systems respond to the virus—a relevant factor in efforts to cure HIV by triggering an immune response.

Gay men have historically been more connected to research networks; moreover, strict FDA rules around female participants of childbearing age mean researchers often default to men.

The only women-focused cure trial so far showed overwhelming demand.
