The Secrets of Smell

What does it mean when the word “fragrance” appears on an ingredients list?

Any number of things, apparently. But the details are kept mum under “trade secrets” protections in a largely self-regulating fragrance industry.

In a test of 140 personal care and cleaning products, three-fourths of toxic chemicals detected came from fragrance. These chemicals include known carcinogens, international “chemicals of concern” and endocrine disrupters.

Advocates for safer cosmetics say there are too many gaps in the research into the safety of these products as people—particularly women of color—face intense social pressure to use them.
