So You Want to Go on Sabbatical…

The demand for global health opportunities for medical students is growing fast, but up to 40% of med students are dissatisfied with their global health education.

Global health sabbaticals for faculty can help create fruitful experiences for students, and home and host institutions overall, but they must be carefully considered, writes virologist Jason T. Blackard.

How to do it right? Blackard offers advice from his own sabbatical in South Africa and Botswana.

One key challenge to embrace: “Identifying our assumptions about another culture (or health care system) in advance, then challenging those very assumptions regularly,” Blackard writes.
