A Tale of 2 Canadas

In Canada, tuberculosis is a shocking 300X more prevalent among Inuit compared to non-indigenous communities; the disease’s toll in the North is comparable to developing countries.

After being diagnosed last year, Kilikvak Karen Kabloona has taken to Instagram to show the arduous reality of TB treatment. Pills must be taken under medical supervision; medications have made her shaky and violently ill, and turned her sweat and tears orange.

Canada is aiming to eliminate TB by 2030—but without addressing the persistent overcrowding and food insecurity that drives the disease in the North, TB will remain, Kabloona says.
