Treatment: Bupe Inequality

Buprenorphine—“bupe”—is one of few proven opioid addiction treatments. The daily pill can be taken for months or years at a time and is coupled with counseling and regular health care provider visits.

But a recent study found that 35X more white patients than patients of color get bupe prescriptions and that 3/4 of bupe prescriptions are paid for in cash or by private insurance, not Medicare/Medicaid.

The Quote: “We shouldn’t see differences this large, given that people of color have similar rates of opioid use disorder,” says researcher Pooja Lagisetty.
