Trouble at Home: Number of Internally Displaced Hits Record High

The number of people displaced within their own countries has reached a record high of 41.3 million worldwide, according to a report released yesterday by the Norwegian Refugee Council.

That figure—which far exceeds the number of refugees—has risen by over a million since the end of 2017.

But “because they haven't crossed a border, they receive pitiful global attention,” said the NRC’s Jan Egeland.

In 2018, 17.2 million new displacements were associated with extreme weather;10.8 million were linked to conflict and violence. Some countries suffered both—in Afghanistan, drought caused more displacement than armed conflict.
