Banning Abortion Aid Spurs Abortions

The US aid ban on groups that offer abortion services overseas has led to 40% higher abortion rates in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the largest empirical study of the Mexico City policy, published in the Lancet.
This is likely because the policy—endorsed by every Republican president since Ronald Reagan—slashes access to family planning services, the study found. When the policy was active, it led to a 14% drop in contraception use and a 12% increase in pregnancies.
The researchers compared countries’ abortion rates during Republican presidencies, when the policy was in place, and during Democratic presidencies, when it was lifted.
