A Claim Too Good to Be True

In 2018 North Korea’s WHO official announced that the country had zero reported HIV cases thanks to a robust prevention program. In fact, HIV has spiraled in North Korea in recent years, and officials are well aware, according to an unusual collaboration between North Korea and US researchers.
The epidemic has raised concern that the country will take draconian measures like criminalizing HIV status in an effort to contain the disease.
The researchers found elevated HIV rates among blood donors, underscoring concerns about North Korea’s “haphazard” health system. North Korea’s high rates of TB—which expedites HIV’s progression—stands to further complicate treatment efforts.
