“An Incredible Force for Good” Lost

HIV researcher and medical professor emeritus Charles Van der Horst, 67, died Friday in the next-to-last-leg of a 120-mile swimming marathon in New York.
 
The activist and professor emeritus at the University of North Carolina was seen going under at 3 pm Friday, the Fort Lee Daily Voice (New Jersey) reports. He was swimming the 15.7-mile leg of a 7-day marathon swim.
           
Van der Horst consulted on global health and HIV research after retiring from UNC in 2015.
 
The former Duke University swim captain wrote movingly last year in the Durham Herald Sun about swimming.
