You’ve Heard About Child Brides—What About Boy Grooms?

A new UN report is the agency’s first to highlight the prevalence of child grooms and calls for all countries to banish child marriage by 2030 per global development goals.

The report found that 115 million boys were married as children—a fifth before the age of 15.

The practice was most prevalent in Central African Republic, Nicaragua and Madagascar.

Child marriage is far more common among girls, who face grave risks from being pregnant at a young age. For boys, child marriage brings premature pressure to provide for a family while at the same time limiting their education and job prospects.
