Living with a chronic inflammation disorder like arthritis is enough to make anyone depressed.
But mental health issues and chronic inflammation—which are rising in tandem—may be more closely related than once thought, emerging research shows. They appear to play off of one another in a “dangerous feedback loop,” writes Shayla Love.
One theory is that as humans have lost touch with the land, they’ve grown estranged from “old friend” microbes needed to maintain a healthy immune system—and curb excess inflammation.
Could a vaccine derived from soil bacteria be the answer?
