A Doctor Disgraced

Paul Shuen was one of Toronto’s most lauded ob-gyns. But when nurses started noticing mysterious white pills inside his labor patients, they got suspicious.

Without patients’ consent, Shuen had been putting women in “mortal danger” by inducing them with misoprostol, which the FDA has explicitly warned against using to induce labor.

Why? Loopholes in the hospital billing system enable doctors to game the system—and Paul Shuen took full advantage. Doctors can bill more for weekend births. So Shuen forced weekend labor by inducing women without their consent with the “mysterious white pill” that, after several ethical conundrums, would topple the celebrated physician.
