Getting a Handle on Hepatitis

The death toll from viral hepatitis now outpaces that of HIV/AIDS, malaria and TB. Approaching World Hepatitis Day on July 28th, a recent WHO progress report illuminates the disease’s impact in Africa.
Sub-Saharan Africa has some of the highest hepatitis B numbers with some 60 million—1 in 15 people—living with the disease.
With low-cost generic drugs, universal access to screening and treatment is not out of reach. But while 27 African countries have endorsed action plans against the disease, just 13 have launched them, according to WHO which calls for coordinated, country-specific response efforts manage the crisis.
