The Opposite of Escapism

A new AI gaming genre simulates the harrowing choice of whether to have an abortion—and the myriad obstacles that can stand in the way.
One game—Trapped—recreates a “Kafkaesque series of rules” that can come with pursuing an abortion. Another game, Choice: Texas, juxtaposes the experiences of women from various backgrounds. Fantastic Fetus navigates the reality of falling pregnant amid draconian proposed abortion laws like those that spurred Poland’s Black Protest.
The games humanize the experience of people “often erased by simplistic, judgmental political stances – or legally prevented from making those decisions altogether,” writes Laura Hudson.
