An Uneven Playing Field

The global AIDS fight is seeing patchy progress, according to a new UNAIDS report calling for more robust leadership as the effort faces a $1 billion funding gap.

Globally, new infections are down 16% since 2010. Eastern and southern Africa have made impressive strides—new infections in South Africa plummeted 40% in that time period. But new infections are on the rise in eastern Europe and central Asia, the MENA region and in Latin America.

There is also a stark disparity in access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)—almost half of the 300,000 people using PrEP worldwide in 2018 were in the US.
