Beating a Silent Killer
Anemia can be deadly—especially for women of childbearing age in low-resource regions—but a new study shows it can be greatly reduced in as few as 10 months.
One study of a nutritional program at a textile factory in Bangladesh—a country where 80% of female garment workers are anemic—showed a daily enhanced lunch with fortified rice lowered anemia by 32%, while supplements alone saw a 12% decline.
The study, published in Nutrients, reinforces earlier findings from a sweeping systematic review of 201 studies that showed fortified diets lowered anemia 46% in a year.
