A Calling Gone Wrong

Renee Bach—a young American with a high school degree—said she had a calling from God to help children in Uganda.

From 2010-2015, her nutrition center took on 940 severely malnourished children. 105 died. Bach, who performed many medical procedures herself, now faces a lawsuit in Ugandan court.

Many of the children Bach took in had complicated illnesses like TB and advanced HIV. Under Ugandan and international law, such serious medical conditions must be treated in an advanced medical facility.

The case highlights questions about American attitudes to volunteerism in Africa, which are often celebrated—and funded—by people back home.
