Epstein’s Extensive Ties to Science

“As some collect butterflies, he collects beautiful minds,” a 2002 New York magazine article said of now-disgraced billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who recently killed himself in a jail cell while facing charges of trafficking underage girls for sex.
Epstein bankrolled research and often spent time with famous scientists. BuzzFeed News rounded up a laundry list of his beneficiaries. Some have apologized for their connection; others haven’t.

A sampling:

  • Harvard mathematical biologist Martin Nowak thanked Epstein in several papers, on topics ranging from cancer's spread through the body to the evolution of HIV.
  • MIT received some $800,000 from Epstein, and this month apologized for elevating his reputation.
  • Famed geneticist George Church held meetings with Epstein in 2014.
