Is Family-Friendly Medicine a Farce?

Last week, a New York Times article made the case for medicine as a family-friendly profession, highlighting the lives of specialists who enjoy flexible working hours.
A barrage of tweets blasted the article, saying the story ignored the sacrifices made by women who “had to make trade-offs that their male counterparts never had to consider”—like switching career paths, earning less and potentially sacrificing future career gains, MedPage Today reported.
"Compared to other workers, we are lucky to have options," wrote Arghavan Salles of Washington University in St. Louis. "But if the only way to have a family is to choose to be underemployed, that doesn't really sound 'family-friendly' to me."
