Outbreak Puts Goma to the Test

Authorities fighting Ebola are expressing cautious optimism on containing Goma’s outbreak—but steep challenges remain.
By today, all but 5 of 800 contacts of the city’s 3 cases were vaccinated; no additional cases have emerged.
Still, health workers face some suspicion and hostility, as well as infrastructure challenges. Only about 10% of residents have access to running water, and many rely on communal latrines.
One resident diligent about hand washing notes that a local washing station is only open from 8am-6pm, Monday through Saturday. “Does Ebola only spread during the day?” he asked ironically. “What about on Sundays?”
