What About the Opioid Children?
As many as 250,000 newborns exposed to opioids in utero are caught in a legal tussle between lawyers seeking a separate trial for them and a judge who has rebuffed their requests.
As a nationwide prescription opioid lawsuit heads to trial in a couple months in Ohio, lawyers are making a final plea for special legal treatment for the infants and their guardians. They argue that the children will need monitoring for the effects of neonatal abstinence syndrome.
The children’s lawyers have complained that attorneys for the cities and counties in the main lawsuit have shut them out of settlement negotiations.
