Days Numbered for Flavored E-Cigs in US

The Trump administration moved toward banning flavored e-cigarettes yesterday, concerned by rising numbers of youth vapers and reports of severe lung illnesses, STAT reports.

“We will not stand idly by as these products become an on-ramp to combustible cigarettes or nicotine addiction for a generation of youth,” Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement.

The policy will be fleshed out over the next few weeks.
The American Academy of Pediatrics welcomed the news—but called it long overdue, and urged the FDA to act quickly. Youth account for many of the ~450 cases of vaping-linked severe lung illness.

Politico checked in on Europe’s reaction to the news. France is on the lookout for evidence of any cases of severe lung illness, and the Portuguese Society of Pulmonology issued a statement warning against e-cigarettes. But Public Health England expressed confidence in Europe’s tighter regulatory standards.
