DRC’s Ex-Health Minister Detained

The DRC’s former health minister was detained on Saturday for alleged mismanagement of Ebola funds; officials feared he might try to flee the country, Al Jazeera reports.

Earlier this month, police questioned Oly Ilunga about his handling of the Ebola response that he oversaw for almost a year. Ilunga stepped down in July after opposing UN plans to introduce a new vaccine, according to the East African. He cited "interference in the management of the response.”

Ilunga has strenuously denied the charges, H5N1 reports via Actualite, promising "to defend himself with the utmost energy for his honor," according to his lawyers.

The outbreak, now the second largest in history, has continued to spread since Ilunga’s departure.

As of Friday, almost 2,000 people have died and confirmed cases have surpassed 3,000, TIME reports via AP.
