Liberian Mothers Die Waiting for a Ride

At the only government hospital in Liberia’s Grand Bassa county, women in labor are dying because their families can’t afford to fuel hospital ambulances—and neither can the hospital.

Amid the fuel and supply shortages, patients have been advised to seek care in the capital city, Monrovia.
Families of mothers who died are calling for an overhaul of the country’s health system, while budget shortages have spurred health worker strikes.
While the hospital was allocated $200,000 in 2018, it only received $95,000.
