Cartography for a Cause

In the developed world, Google and Apple Maps may seem to have just about every inch of ground covered—but huge swaths of the globe remain digitally unmapped, posing huge challenges to disaster response.
Why the map gap? Digital mapping projects are propped up by ad sales, companies have a hard time selling these in remote areas. Plus, governments may lack the resources for comprehensive cartography.
But through projects like Missing Maps, volunteers across the globe use satellite technology to draft maps of vulnerable areas, which are verified by experts on the ground—making a “Wikipedia of maps.”
