Is CRISPR the New Space Race?

The notorious CRISPR twins scandal in China sparked fresh crackdowns on gene editing technology in the US and China, but Russia remains a “legislative vacuum” on the issue, with Putin himself likely giving any go-ahead for research.
CRISPR technology has never been approved to manipulate human germlines. But in the absence of official regulations, Russian scientists are hoping to gain Putin’s approval by appealing to his eldest daughter, an endocrinologist with influential views on bioethics.
One scientist “compared the quest to perfect germline editing to the arms and space races of the Cold War, only with more runners.”
