DRC Puts Ebola in a Corner

Ebola in the DRC has been corralled into a much smaller geographical area—27 zones, compared to 207 at the outbreak’s peak, the WHO’s Michael Ryan told reporters yesterday.

Now it must be killed—a special challenge for rural pockets where the threat of rebel attacks continues.

The WHO is working to explain its 2-pronged vaccination strategy to affected communities—including one unlicensed vaccine given to 236,000 possible patient contacts, and a complementary jab for to build a “firewall” against the disease in large cities and other areas where it would be hard to contain.

Next week, WHO will re-evaluate the outbreak’s emergency status.
