Gene-Based Cures for All?

A gene-based therapy for a rare form of blindness costs $425,000—per eye.

How to extend gene-based medications beyond hospitals in wealthy countries? The NIH and the Gates Foundation are investing $200 million in gene-based cures for sickle cell disease and HIV.

The Quote: “We aim to go big or go home. [But] I’m not going to lie. This is a bold goal,” said NIH Director Francis Collins.

Skeptics asked, if the cures work, will they reach those who need it? Only about two-thirds of HIV-positive people in parts of Africa are on antiretroviral treatment, which costs less than $100 in the US.
