More Than a Game
Gaming advocates in South Korea want the WHO to drop “Internet gaming disorder” from its list of classified diseases, even as the government considers adding it to their own disease roster.
Industry advocates say that would undercut South Korea’s economy. In 2017, gaming raked in 10X more money than K-pop in South Korea. They say the gaming industry is being exploited for the financial benefit of psychiatrists and researchers who have compared the brains of gamers to those of people addicted to drugs.
