“The Scars Match the Story”

Medical evidence corroborates the accounts of US asylum seekers stranded in Tijuana, Physicians for Human Rights doctors say in a new report.

They interviewed 18 people from Mexico and Central America—a “medical snapshot”—and documented physical and psychological evidence of trauma that matches reports of violence and persecution in their home countries.

The report also concludes that US border policies compound their trauma.

The Quote: “This is a health and human rights crisis that is being treated as a border security crisis,” says Ben McVane of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
