The Struggle After the Shooting
Students in Santa Fe, Texas and Parkland, Florida are struggling at school in the aftermath of devastating mass shootings last year.
While the media frenzy has tapered off, applications for federal Project SERV grants—designed to help schools recover from violence—detail how test scores, mental health and behavior have suffered in the wake of deadly shootings.
In both communities, demand for counseling services has skyrocketed.
Parkland’s test scores have plummeted since the shooting and the school climbed 20 places in the district’s substance abuse rankings. Overall, the school district encompassing Parkland has seen a rise in drug possession, physical attacks and intimidation.
