WHO Sounds Alarm over Measles

Madagascar. The DRC. The Philippines. Ukraine.

An “alarming upsurge” of measles outbreaks in these countries and more has WHO experts on high alert, asking governments to double down on vaccination efforts.

Measles cases rose a shocking 300% in the first 3 months of 2019 compared to 2018, spurred by vaccination coverage gaps. Currently global coverage is about 86% for the first dose, and just 70% for the second.

“There is no reason why we cannot try to reach every child to enable them to be fully immunized and protected against this disease,” urged the SAGE group chair Alejandro Cravioto.
