Youth Suicide is Spiraling

Once relatively rare, US teen suicide rates are now climbing far faster than any other age group, according to a CDC report published today.

Suicides among 10 to 24-year-olds spiked 56% from 2007-2017.

Firearms are a glaring contributor, but the root causes remain a mystery. For example, studies have painted the internet both as driver of depression and a trove of meaningful social connections and suicide prevention resources.

The Quote: “If you had kids suddenly dying at these rates from a new disease or infection, there would be a huge outcry,” says Lisa M. Horowitz of the National Institute of Mental Health.
