All Eyes on the Sahel

The mounting humanitarian crisis in Africa’s Sahel region is going tragically unnoticed, warns the UN food agency.

In Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger—already flooded with refugees from elsewhere—more than 860,000 people are internally displaced by relentless conflict, forced to abandon the crops they rely on.

Burkina Faso is hardest-hit, with malnutrition pushing 20% in some areas, exacerbated by climate change as the crucial rainy season grows shorter.

The World Food Program is providing aid to over 2.6 million people, but cash is running low. The agency is appealing for $150 million to continue.
