Ebola Response on Pause

The Ebola response has been scaled back as machete-wielding militants terrorize Beni in eastern DRC—an outbreak hotspot, Amy Maxmen reports.
77 people have been killed in the recent violence.
UN staffers were evacuated after protesters—angry that the militants' attacks weren’t stopped—set a UN vehicle on fire; WHO evacuated a third of its 120 staffers.
Cases had dwindled recently but are now expected to climb just as Ebola fighters were beginning to see an end in sight.

Remaining responders haven’t given up. “We want to stay in the field and finish the job,” says WHO epidemiologist Marie-Roseline Darnycka Bélizaire.
