A Makeover Can’t Overcome Flawed Foreign Gaze

It’s happens all-too-common often: Western researchers drop in for a few weeks, go home and publish research, while local experts are underrepresented and undervalued.

Madukar Pai, who saw this firsthand during his medical training in India, calls out the inequity—looking closely at who drives research, who dominates authorship, and who edits the research. Overwhelmingly, he concludes, the Global North is dictating the agenda.

Correcting this “foreign gaze,” he says, “ …will require us to collectively ask and address hard questions such as, why, in 2019, most global health journals and funders are headquartered in London, New York, Geneva, and Seattle, and run by colonial-era institutions?”
