Period Peace of Mind

75% of Ethiopian women and girls can’t access menstruation supplies.
When Freweini Mebrahtu moved to the US, she noted an “overwhelming” bounty of disposable supplies. So, she designed a cheaper, reusable pad that has helped nearly 800,000 girls and women.
“The whole goal was not only making the pads, but also attacking the cultural baggage,” Mebrahtu says. To help her, OBGYN Lewis Wall founded Dignity Period, a nonprofit that distributes the pads and conducts menstruation workshops for Ethiopian girls and boys.
“By teaching not just girls … we’re really transforming the thinking of the society,” Mebrahtu says.
