Talking Toilets
Happy World Toilet Day! Since 2013, WTD has highlighted the SDG aimed at securing access to adequate sanitation and banishing open defecation by 2030.
The returns are high. One analysis calculated a 6:1 cost-benefit ratio of investing in ending open defecation.
This year, India stands out—declaring itself free of open defecation last month. But that accolade was blatantly premature.
But India deserves credit for opening the conversation. In 2014, Narendra Modi began his tenure as prime minister with a campaign to end open defecation—and talking toilets is a big part of the fight.
