Tedros’s Nightmare
What worries WHO Director General Tedros more than anything else? The flu.
A global pandemic is “not a matter of if but when,” says Tedros. An outbreak like the one that occurred 100 years ago could have a much broader impact with globalization.
Tedros called on countries to stop “investing in panic” once outbreaks are already underway and focus on preparedness and disaster surveillance. Other recommendations include:
- Sharing preparedness responsibilities between health services, finance ministers, and parliamentarians
- Richer countries helping less fortunate countries more
- Not politicizing outbreaks
“Do we know this could be a more serious problem than a terrorist attack?” Tedros warns.
