Weekend Warriors Fight for Women

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets this weekend ahead of today’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Just one of many shocking statistics highlighted by the UN: One-third of all women and girls suffer physical or sexual violence at some point in their lives,
To highlight the scourge, protesters flooded the streets of Paris on Saturday, Reuters reports. And in Belgium—which keeps no official stats on femicide—protesters chanted “A dress is not a yes,” according to US New & World Report.
And globally, gender-based violence is met with a staggering lack of accountability, says UN Women chief Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, who kicks off a 2-year campaign today against rape—just one of myriad forms of gender-based violence.
The tragic truth:  “In many countries, women know that they are overwhelmingly more likely to be blamed than believed.”
