5 Tech Giants, 1 Lawsuit

Tech giants aided and abetted deadly child labor practices used to produce batteries—and they knew it, according to a landmark lawsuit against Apple, Google, Dell, Microsoft, and Tesla.
The companies had “specific knowledge” that cobalt used in their ubiquitous lithium batteries was linked to dire working conditions in the DRC—home to 60% of the world’s cobalt.
Children forced to work for mining companies dug for cobalt in deadly underground tunnels for as little as $2 a day.

Some were buried alive; others suffered life-altering injuries and received no compensation, according to the suit filed by International Rights Advocates.
