Adorning Graves with Junk Food

“El Susto”—a documentary film that premiered at the Global Health Film Festival in London—opens with the image of people in Mexico laying junk foods at their loved ones’ graves.
It’s a telling image. Mexico has the highest diabetes death rate in the world, spurred by the spiraling consumption of ultra-processed food and drinks, SciDev.Net reports.
A new PAHO report finds that Mexico also leads the world in the consumption of sugary drinks, and obesity is surging, Mexico News Daily reports.
Mexico is addressing the issue with a sugar tax and laws demanding more explicit warning labels on products. Soft drink companies also pledged to slash sugar content on drinks sold in Mexico.
