Will 2 Weeks of Talks Be Followed by Action?

World leaders will be warned of a full-blown climate emergency over 2 weeks of climate talks aimed at stepping up countries’ ambitions against climate change, theBBC reports.
Kicking off today in Madrid, COP25 comes as almost every country on earth prepares to make new climate pledges by 2020’s end under the Paris climate accord. US President Donald Trump, who is currently withdrawing from the agreement, will not attend.
Ahead of UN Secretary General António Guterres called for a stronger commitment to renewable energy and a hard stop on fossil fuel subsidies and new coal-fired power stations post-2020.
An Oxfam report painted a bleak picture of the damage already done:
Climate-related disasters have been the number 1 reason for internal displacement in the past decade
People living in small island developing states are 150X more likely to be displaced by extreme weather than people living in Europe.
